Steve Ott born
August 19,
1982 in
Summerside, Prince Edward Island,
Canada, is a professional hockey player for the
Dallas Stars of the
NHL.
Ott was a first round draft pick of the
Stars 25th overall at the
2000 NHL Entry Draft. He played junior hockey for the
OHL's
Windsor Spitfires and had a brief spell with the
Utah Grizzlies of the
AHL before joining the main
Stars roster.
Ott represented Canada at the
2001 World Junior Hockey Championship, helping the team win the bronze medal.
During the
2004–05 NHL lockout, Ott played for the
Hamilton Bulldogs of the AHL where he set a team record for penalty minutes in a season, earning 279.
Ott was suspended by the NHL for three games due to an illegal hit on
Jordan Leopold of the
Colorado Avalanche during a game on
March 9,
2008. For the hit, which left Leopold injured, Ott took both his feet off the ice and his elbow may also have made contact with Leopold's head.
Before beginning his professional hockey career, Ott raced outboard hydroplanes and runabouts in the
American Power Boat Association (APBA). His father is a past and current National Champion and still continues to race. He pit crews for his father during his off-season in the summer.
